This summer I roadtripped around California with my 14 year old son Masen for a few weeks. We drove from L.A. up Highway 1 to San Francisco, back down to L.A. and then finished the trip with a few days in Palm Springs. We camped on the beach, woke up with the sun, and just talked about life. About photography, our goals, and how good In-N-Out’s burgers are.
Being a young parent (Masen was born when I was barely 17) has allowed me to have a special relationship with Masen. I won’t try to put it into words - we just have our thing. I know he’s going to be off to college in a few years so taking this trip now was something I had to make happen. For both of us. Our relationship is better for it and the best thing about these memories is they are ours. The future may hold any number of things but these memories can’t ever be taken from us. I like the idea of that.
This is a mix of images taken by us both, I didn’t feel the need to specify as we basically tossed the camera back and forth the whole trip. We met some amazing people along the way and found out a little more about what it means to be father and son. Here’s a few of my favorite images. We also documented our trip on Instagram using the hashtag #thatcaliroadtrip
Hope this post inspires some of you to get out there and see the world with someone you hold dear. Life is short, make time for people who matter.
Friggin amazing post, Christian. Killer images of course, but tons of feeling to them as well.
