VSCO’s latest release the Alternative Process Collection is another killer set of presets for Adobe Lightroom. I tend to view any release they offer in a “what can it do for me?” mindset over the “how well does it emulate film.” This allows me to break the presets down in practical terms and this ultimately keeps my workflow efficient. This collection is versatile in the fact that it performs well with portraits (always my number one concern) but also creates a cinematic feel to landscapes.
These images from a recent commercial job I photographed across the western US show the versatility these presets contain. I’ve been gravitating towards a more rich look with portraits but one thing I love about these is the ability to take high contrast tones and smooth them out. The “pulled” presets (indicated with a small -1) do a fine job of this. Also don’t be afraid to mix it up and play - the image of the farmer in his harvested mustard field is actually edited with the Provia + Night preset.

Solid stuff, man.
